Free Horoscopes - An Introduction
Most people think that free horoscopes are the little pieces based on your birthday that you read in newspapers or magazines. These free horoscopes are based on when the Sun falls into a particular zodiac sign. If you say you're an Aquarius or Gemini, what you're really saying is that you were born when the Sun was in that sign. But there's much more to a horoscope than simply your Sun sign. Did you know that you also have a Moon sign? Or a Mercury sign?
Most free horoscopes you see in the press or on the web only give you part of the picture. A personal horoscope is just that - personal. It's unique to you as an individual as no two people can have exactly the same horoscope. That's because your horoscope is not only based on your date of birth, but also the time and place you were born. Even identical twins aren't born at exactly the same moment!
As your personal horoscope depends on your time and place of birth, it's impossible to make generalized forecasts applying to large groups of people from this information. Your Sun sign is simply the zodiac sign that the Sun is in when you're born. The zodiac is a large belt of star constellations that encircles the earth and every planet falls in a specific zodiac sign. It takes the Sun about one year to travel through the twelve zodiac signs and spends about one month in each. The exact date that it enters each sign varies by year.
The zodiac sign that the Sun falls in when you are born is often referred to as your "zodiac sign" or "star sign." Everyone is born when the Sun is in one sign or another and approximately one twelfth of the population falls under each sign. The number actually varies slightly because there are seasonal variations in birth rates during the year. Using Sun signs alone makes it practical to offer character descriptions for that group of people. The second type of Sun sign astrology offers forecasts created by comparing actual planet locations with the Sun's location when you were born.
The reason that the Sun is used in this way is that its movement through the zodiac is regular and easily predictable. The other planets have more erratic orbits and so it's more difficult to make forecasts based on their movements that can apply to large groups of people.
Typically, free horoscopes take into account all the planets and how they relate to each other. Although there are slightly different forms of free horoscopes in different parts of the world, they all work in fundamentally the same way. In the West, your horoscope will usually be drawn on a wheel making it easy to see how the planets relate to each other. Astrologers study your horoscope and analyze the patterns that describe your personality and life. They read the information contained in your chart.
A horoscope, or birth chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto - are from your point of view at the place you were born at the exact time you were born. (In astrology, the Sun and Moon are referred to as "planets.") Not just the zodiac sign, but also the precise degree and minute of the position of the planet's positions are worked out. These positions are marked on the chart wheel. With an accurately calculated chart, you also don't have to worry about the idea of your Sun sign being on the cusp. It will be placed firmly in one sign or another. This information is essential to obtaining good quality free horoscopes. |
