FUN REPORTS

When you watch closely, you
may come to realize that diving is
a form of flying. For the average human being, this requires an unnatural act of trust in one's talents and luck. Of the many divers who have amazed and astounded observers over the years, few have the ability to combine focus and skill with complete abandon the way Tom Daley does.

This young athlete was born when the Sun was first going into the air sign of Gemini. This gives him an inborn fearlessness that makes the height of the diving platform less an object of fear, and more a perch of sorts from which he can launch his dance from the sky to the water. Water symbolism is also involved here, submerging oneself on the other, wet, side of this journey can be just as frightening as stepping out into the air. Tom has Jupiter - the planet of faith and optimism - Pluto, the planet of obsessive drives - and the North Node, which symbolizes connections with success - in the extremely wet sign of Scorpio. There is no wonder why this young person has felt compelled to fly through the air and submerse himself with a trust that he will be all right at the end of the procedure. His Saturn in Pisces, while not so helpful in concrete details, can come to his aid when he needs to add precision to his artful movements.

Winning an event for divers under the age of 18 while only 10 years old is no easy feat, but Tom accomplished this in 2004. It will be tremendously exciting to see how he fares in the 2008 Olympics. Let's see what the planets might have to tell us about his potential performance at the platform finals of August 23rd.

On the day of the event, The Sun will be just entering Virgo, making an exact stressful square to Tom's Sun. While this can be an inspiring day for Tom, it will also be challenging. Suddenly, when faced with the best of the rest of the world to compete with, Tom may not feel as completely confident as he might. An eclipse of the Moon will occur on August 16th, and it will also be in a square with Tom's North and South nodes, accenting the fact that the world is watching him. Will this add to his angst? Undoubtedly, it could.

Tom is experiencing a long-term transit of Saturn opposite Saturn, as well. Everyone has this experience at around the age of 14, and it is a strong push toward maturation and a beginning of a time period when goals will be measured by a different, more discerning, yardstick. As Tom grows older, he will no longer be only a "wunderkind." He will have to prove he's got what it takes to perform on levels that are excellent for adults as well as adolescents. At this critical point in his life, he is looking his own potential in the eye, hoping to come to terms with it.

Will he take away a great medal on the day of the platform finals? That will depend on how well he handles some of the other, positive aspects of the day. Mars has just passed a trine to his Sun, which will give him energy and focus. On the 23rd, the Moon will have favorable aspects to Neptune and Uranus, perhaps calming him some, while it will also oppose Pluto, allowing him to be mentally steeled for the task. Two other powerful, favorable aspects could help him on that day. Mercury will be in a semisquare to Jupiter, allowing him to draw on faith in his abilities, and the Moon will come to the position of his Sun, allowing him to feel strong and capable. Certainly, focusing on these positive points will help him to at least score a bronze.

Despite recent injuries that may reflect
the beginning of a decline from the prime of
her life as a marathon runner, Paula Radcliffe's winning days are far from over. In fact, the 2008 women's marathon at the Beijing Olympics looks like the next winning moment for her.

Not surprisingly, we find Paula is a golden-gammed Sagittarius, focused on her goals with laser-like intensity, and unwilling to relent in her pursuit of excellence. In addition to the Sun, the planet Mercury (which helps to describe her mental process, focus and nervous system) is in this sports-inclined sign. A strengthening, harmonic interaction between Mars (in Leo) probably helped Paula to realize early on what her mission in life would be, and to pursue it with unyielding determination.

Her recent hip injury is not unusual for a runner, especially a Sagittarian one, as people born under this sign often have weakness in that area of the body. Right now, Saturn is in the sign of Virgo, draining Paula's vital energy, as it is represented by the Sun and Mercury. While the hip injury is probably going to continue to affect Paula off and on, there will be hopeful news from the planets on August 17th, the day of the Olympics Women's Marathon. Despite her sometimes painful hip, things seem to be set up for her to separate from the pack early on as she has done so many times in the past.

The marathon will take place on one of the most favorable days of the year for Paula, when the Sun will be in a powerful, reinforcing trine aspect with the position of the Sun at Paula's birth. On top of that, Mercury will square Paula's Mercury, giving her the kind of focus and concentration she needs to complete such a body-breaking task as completing a marathon.

The Moon, posited in Pisces, will help Paula connect her Mercury and Sun to the task at hand so she will have full access to her native talents over the course of the race. The eclipse of the Moon that takes place on the 16th will be very near to opposing Paula's sun, identifying this as a moment when she will be able to shine. The Mars-Pluto square in the sky will also key in to her North Node, seeming to indicate this could be another Paula Radcliffe moment, when she literally runs away with yet another spectacular performance and becomes connected.
